Model 3 owners have taken to social media and online forums to air issues they’ve had with their sedans due to the frigid weather of the last week. Cold conditions are a drain on battery range, no matter the car brand. But other predicaments are particular to Tesla- including frozen door handles.

I’m not kidding, this is a real reason we didn’t consider putting a deposit on a Model 3. We do not have a garage, and while we plan to build one, I thought, you know, a car like that really shouldn’t be outside all the time. Frozen door handles are seriously one of the things. I have frozen doors on our normal cars often enough that I thought this could be a real showstopper for more than a few days per year.
Granted, she still parks outside at work, so this could still have been an issue at times. This, and the fact that the only “dealer” is 120 miles away. And that you still can’t get the “$35,000 Model 3" ....

To be fair, I have a hell of a time getting the doors of my regular car open when there’s that much ice.

Hydrogen’s boiling point is -423F. Fuel Cell cars will rule the world.

Not quite sure why the door handles have to have fancy electric motors that slide them in any out anyway....seems like a pointless waste to me. And, if it’s for the sake of ‘fuel’ efficiency, you can’t tell me they would make that huge a difference each charge...?

So a couple of things.
Battery life, sure. Cold isn’t friendly to batteries, though I’d think that there’d be some way the battery could warm itself (or even the car) if it were plugged in and charging. Maybe not the best for the environment, but okay for the car.
The door handles seems like a dumb oversight. Certainly those handles “work” by detecting the persons hand inside (after they popped out) and then releasing an electronic latch, right? (This is how the BrianGriffin school of engineering would build those handles). Therefore if the temp outside is below, say, 32*...they just stay sticking out.

I wonder can a Model X open the stupid doors after ice rain?
At least they work for something.

They aren't electric on the 3. On the 3 you push on the fat bit of the handle which pops out the skinny bit. Pulling on the skinny bit is what opens the door.

I want to know how they are supposed to fix door handles with an OTA update.

This seems reasonable. But also more fragile than the pull-handle style on all three of our other cars.
Still, I go to the passenger’s side when the doors are iced up. Better to yank on that and break that handle than the driver’s side. I then push the driver’s door from the inside.

that ice is already melted.

Videos of model X's with ice are harder to find than I thought.

On my volt you can quickly see how inefficient electric heat is in dropping your range, in addition to the decreased estimated range. 70 degree day 58-63 miles. 40 degrees 51 miles 20F 48 miles.
Its why I set to “ hold” so it will turn on the gas motor warming the cabin. I think pure EVs have a bit to go in the north.

You know. I feel that if someone lives in such harsh conditions they should at least get something to cover their car, that ice over there is not gonna let you drive for a while.

But he’s going to fix it all with an OTA software update.
I shit you not, people will think he can fix the FROZEN MECHANICAL DOOR HANDLES with an OTA update. If you believe that shit you deserve to be frozen out of your car.

Because Elon keeps saying everything can be fixed via OTA so they keep tweeting him which gets picked up by car news sites etc.

after marrying my sibling, my inlaw and them moved up to new england. THey were at lowes , when my sibling put 3 ice scrapers in the cart. “why do we need 3? ”, “one for each of our cars and one to keep at the house for whoevers breaks first”
Then the shovel isle, grabs 2 car shovels and a couple full size. “why do i need a car shovel” “to dig yourself out” “won’t they close work? ” ...another blank stare..”uh.. no”

Because Elon’s ego - same with the “falcon” doors on the X.
“In retrospect the right thing to do with the Model X would have been to take a lot of the really awesome cool things and table them for a future version,” Musk said. “So, if I could wind back the clock, I would say, ‘look we’ve got these great ideas. Things that I want to implement and other people want to implement.’ But the smart move would actually have been to table those for version 2 and version 3 of Model X instead of piling them all into version 1.”
